Part 1. Dhuvaafaru: the long wait is over
First of a series of 7 videos retracing the relocation of an entire community of nearly 4000 people, that lost their island home after the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami.
The Red Cross Red Crescent helped them by building a new community on the deserted island of Dhuvaafaru.
When the tsunami swept across the Maldives on 26 December 2004 the island of Kandholhudhoo was rendered uninhabitable, leaving more than 3,600 people homeless.
Following an extensive study the Maldives National Disaster Management Centre identified the uninhabited island of Dhuvaafaru as the most suitable settlement location due to its topographical characteristics such as its comparatively high elevation, its size and its reef - essential for better protection against tidal surges.
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) signed an agreement with the Government of Maldives in May 2005 to build a new community on Dhuvaafaru Island. The IFRC has funded construction of 562 houses as well as other community infrastructure such as an administrative building, a pre-school, primary school and secondary school, an auditorium, water supply and sewage systems, a sports complex, roads, and a power supply system backed up with solar energy.
Building this community on a remote island in the Indian Ocean posed an immense logistical challenge but on the 14th December the entire population of Kandholhudhoo were resettled in their new homes on Dhuvaafaru.

Tuna spaghetti / Maldivian style spaghetti / easy spaghetti recipe / spaghetti by zesty.mv
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ingredients for cooking spaghetti:
- 8 cups water
- 2 tbsp cooking oil
- 1 1/2 tbsp salt
- 1/2 pkt spaghetti (250g)
Direction for cooking spaghetti:
- Bring water to boil on medium heat. Once heated, add salt, cooking oil and add spaghetti. Give a quick stir to avoid sticking together.
- Put the lid on and cook 10-15 minutes. Cooking time varies depending on the thickness of your Spaghetti. Do check occasionally. When there is no more white center in the middle, it is cooked.
- Once cooked, strain the spaghetti into a bowl. Reserve around 2 cups of Spaghetti cooked water to add to the spaghetti sauce.
Ingredients for spaghetti sauce:
- 3 tbsp cooking oil
- 1 nos. onion (large)
- 6 nos garlic cloves
- 1/2 of scotch bonnet chilli (according to your taste)
- 20 nos curry leaves
- 6 dried red chillies
- 1/4 tsp grated ginger
- Salt to taste (2 tsp)
- 1 pkt dried tuna flakes (25g)
- 1 can canned tuna chunks (180g)
- 1 pkt tomato paste (70g)
- 1/2 tbsp dried oregano
- 1/4 tsp black pepper powder
Directions:
- Finely dice the onions. Finely chop the garlic and slice the chilli.
- On medium heat, add cooking oil, onion, garlic, fresh chilli, curry leaves, dried red chillies (cut into half- remove seeds if you don't like seeds), grated ginger, salt to taste (1 1/2 tsp).
- cook till onions are lightly browned. Stir to avoid onions from burning. Can reduce the heat till it is lightly browned.
- Break tuna flakes into little pieces a bit. Not too much. Add it to the lightly browned onions and mix for 1-2 minutes on medium heat.
- Add canned tuna chunks and cook 2-3 minutes. Stir occasionally.
- Add tomato paste, oregano, black pepper powder and cook 2-3 minutes.
- Add the reserved spaghetti cooked water and cook 3-4 minutes on low heat, stiring occasionally.
- Check if salt is according to your desired taste. I added 1/2 tsp more salt at this stage.
- Add cooked spaghetti and combine well for 2-3 minutes. Serve hot.
- Enjoy! Thank you for watching. Don't forget to subscribe to see all the upcoming new videos every week ♥️ .
